How to Use Marketing and Advertising to Create Powerful Attention Grabbing Headlines

Wish the headline of your ad or brochure or web page stopped your prospects in their tracks and got them to read your marketing copy?

Each morning on my short trip to the office I pass our local elementary school. If I'm running late and go by anytime near 8:45, when school starts I'm invariably stopped by the crossing guard. He waves a big red STOP sign and drivers traveling in both directions stop and wait and watch the children scamper across the street to school.

Your ads could work the same way. Imagine if each time your prospects saw or heard one of your headlines, they came to a complete stop and paid attention to the information you wanted them to.

Unlike a crossing guard or a police officer, you aren't going to get a 100% response rate, but shouldn't you be getting more attention than you are now?

The typical response rate to most advertising is less than five percent and frequently even as low as a third of a percent. Why is this response rate so low? Most prospects never make it past the headlines to read the business marketing materials. Is this happening to you?

If you want to get a better response with your small business marketing and advertising, and generate more leads and sales, start by improving the first thing people see— your headlines.

Want your headlines and your marketing strategy to generate a better response, more leads and more sales?

The Small Business Marketing Solution shows you how to create effective headlines and put them to use with a business marketing strategy that will attract your best prospects and convert them to clients.

What makes a headline good? What makes a headline work?

A good headline gets people's attention; it makes them want to keep listening or keep reading. Say you are writing the copy for the home page of your web site. A good headline will keep your prospects reading on to the next sentence or paragraph.

Once into the first paragraph, you want your marketing copy to either keep them reading or prompt them to take the action you want them to take, whether it’s to call you, click through to your order page, or sign up for your free ezine.

Your headlines are like an invitation to a party. If they are boring or don’t make people want to keep reading, you’ll attract only a small fraction of the number of prospects who actually want what you sell. Make it sound interesting, make your prospects curious and you’ll get anywhere from two to twenty times the number of buyers.

Judy, one of my clients, knew this and wanted to improve the headlines for the web pages on her site where she sells ebooks and cds for network marketers. Despite putting in her best efforts and many long hours on her marketing copy, she was still struggling to come up with killer headlines that would get more people to discover the value of her products.

During one of our weekly conversations, I started rattling off headline ideas for her one after another and she was amazed. She thought each one was a gem and couldn’t believe how easy it was for me to come up them.

Want to know a secret? I keep a file of great headlines that I’ve run across. It contains thousands of ideas I can modify and use. When a client needs ideas, I open up my headline file and find one I can customize to their target market and situation.

When I told Judy this secret, she wanted to know if I could send her my personal file of winning headlines. This was one request I won’t grant even for my personal clients! Instead I did gave her ten of the best ideas I could come up with that she could use to reach her audience.

What are you looking for to grow your business? There are times when you want to make decisions on your own and there are times when you need step-by-step help. You can’t expect your business to take off or move to the next level if you keep going in circles.

Want your own file of best selling headlines?

To write better ads and improve your marketing copy, create your own file of successful headlines. Make note of the ones that grab your attention, that make you laugh cry or wonder or pique your curiosity enough to get you to read the ad or article or web page. Jot them down as you watch TV, or read or surf the Web. Then take those ideas or concepts and change them to fit your products or services and your target market.

The next time you pick up a magazine, whether it’s Fast Company, Business 2.0 or Cosmopolitan, take note of the headlines.  You’ll see a surprising number of boring headlines ones,  such as:

“Creating an exceptional business experience is our agenda.”

“Life time fitness.”

“Keep your eye on the horizon.”

“New ideas from the frontier of health care.”

Write down the headlines that grab your attention:

“A Lightbulb that Could Change the World.”

 “A Mushroom in Your Tank?”

“Are You Intimidating?”

“7 Secrets to Success in the Blogosphere.”

“The Smartest Companies to Start Now”

“Can’t Get Enough Of Our Juicy Monthly Confessions?”

Then, when you need a better headline for your marketing and advertising, you’ll have a bunch of creative ideas to play with. For example, if you provide financial services, you could just change a few words in each of the above to read:

“A Financial Strategy that Could Change Your Life.”

“The Secret to Putting More Money in the Bank.”

“Are You Intimidated by Not Knowing Where to Invest?”

“7 Secrets to A Financial Plan That Works.”

“The Smartest Places to Invest Now”

“Can’t Get Enough Of Our Inside Investing Tips?”

See how it works? You don’t need to re-invent the wheel or come up with a headline from scratch; just improve on a good idea that’s already out there.

Creating killer headlines is the first step to ramping up sales. With a few changes to your ads and marketing copy, you could easily increase your response rate by anywhere from two to twenty times.

Ready to increase the response rate to your marketing and your sales by two to twenty times?
