Did You Claim Your CD Yet?

By Charlie Cook   |   September 22, 2011

You’re a busy entrepreneur.

Finding extra time in the day to work on your hobbies, get a decent meal, or even to spend time with loved ones can be difficult.

Finding the time to print and read a report on how to grow your business is low on the priority totem pole.

I know the feeling. Read More »

The Best Networking Tool Ever

By Charlie Cook   |   October 7, 2010

Subject: MFS: {!name} – The Best Networking Tool Ever
{!name},
Over the last couple of months I’ve been talking to my son about looking for a new job. You know, trying to give him some guidance without being the pushy Dad.
Right out of college his first job (big surprise!) was in online marketing, and it’s been a great starter job. But now, two years later, I’m thinking it’s time for him to move up the ladder and find a new, more challenging job. Marketing seems like a good fit. You know how Dads can be.
I’ve been working on him to get out there and network, make connections, and see what positions are available. And I know he thinks he doesn’t have any connections, being just two years out of college and all.
So just for fun I did a quick search on my favorite networking tool, LinkedIn.com. First I selected the advanced search function in the top right-hand corner. Then I selected location (New York City), the industry area (marketing), and 1st and 2nd level connections. Under school I typed in Hamilton, the college my son graduated from.
What’d I find?
Over 160 alumni of my son’s school — people who’d be more than likely to talk to him — work in marketing and advertising in New York City where he lives. And of course each of them probably knows dozens of others in the field.
With just a little effort my son could find more job opportunities than he’d know what to do with, and learn a ton about his field.
Whether you’re looking for a job, or want to grow your business by connecting with new clients, LinkedIn.com is one of the most powerful tools out there. And it offers most of its functions for free.
Want to learn the secret to making this incredible tool work for you to find a job or grow your business?
My colleague, Jan Vermeiren, author of “How to REALLY use LinkedIn,” is hosting a free webinar this coming Tuesday, October 12. And I strongly recommend you sign up.
I’ve included the link below, and before you click on it, I’ve got to tell you Jan is not a sales person. His sign-up page doesn’t sell and only gives a rough idea of the value he provides. But I know from interviewing Jan that he knows LinkedIn inside and out. His free webinar is a must attend for everyone in business.

How To Win At Business This Year…

By Charlie Cook   |   January 26, 2010

Are you spending your limited time and money on advertising, networking, making calls, mailings, meeting with prospects, yet only achieving middling results this year?

Marketing a business is like any game. If you know the rules you are much more likely to win.

Think about it. Do you play bridge, golf, tennis or go bowling. How would you do if you didn’t understand the rules. You’d spend a lot of effort but you’d wouldn’t get the results you wanted.

And the same is true for your business! Read More »

For Members Only…

By Charlie Cook   |   December 9, 2009

Over the last ten years every time a client asked for a sample email, sample article, sample proposal, squeeze page, or any of a thousand different resources of mine, I’ve had to dig through my files and send it.

What a pain…

For the last few years I’ve know there was a better way and it involved Read More »

What’s the Second Biggest Bottleneck to Small Business Growth

By Charlie Cook   |   August 12, 2005

For most small businesses the first bottleneck to growing their business is generating leads and attracting new clients. Thanks to top search engine placement a web site that converts like crazy, and a track record that clients love, my marketing business is bringing in more leads and clients than I can handle.

In order to continue to grow my business, my bottleneck is the way I spend my time. I need more time. How is that possible given that they’re are only 24 hours in the day. Its actually easy, and I’m working on it as you read this. I’ll be offloading all the mind numbing, time eating tasks that keep me from finishing my next marketing book and having more time for clients.

I can easily see 6-8 hours a week I could give myself simply by hiring someone else to do things like editing, ezine production and web page production. You may be thinking you couldn’t afford to hire staff, part time or otherwise.

For me its simple math. I can hire someone to do my production and administrative tasks for $25 an hour, freeing me to develop new products or work with clients. Let’s see, with 2 hours I can write a newsletter that generates a couple of thousand dollars in passive income and another coaching or consulting client.

If you’re like me, you probably have waited too long and spent too much time doing stuff you could farm out via elance or to people who would love the work. Do it and you’ll be able to focus your time on the activities that really make you money.

How Can I Ensure My Web Site Works With All Browsers?

By Charlie Cook   |   May 23, 2005

When people visit your web site you want them to see it at its best. If it looks good on your computer, you may assume that everyone else is getting the same professional view of your online business, but there is a good chance you’d be wrong. Each browser, browser version and operating system combination interprets your web site code differently.

It may look great in your IE browser, but columns could be squashed to AOL viewers or typefaces bold instead of not. Unless you own one of every operating system, each browser version and type, you won’t know how others view your site. Fortunately there is a simpler way to check your sites browser compatibility.

Thanks to an alert Ari at ximedia.net I was alerted that one of my primary pages had alignment problems in IE and was quickly able to fix the Marketing Tools Buyers Guide.

To see the problem I tested Browsercam.com. Within a couple of minutes it provides screen shots of your site from as many browsers and operating systems as you want so you can ensure your site looks its best for all viewers. Worth a try. – Charlie Cook

What Program Did You Use to Install Your Blog?

By Charlie Cook   |   January 20, 2005

“Charlie, I’ve been getting your articles and just now seen your blog. I want to install one myself, and wonder what program you use? Did you go to www.blogger.com or?”

– Judy Cullins BookCoaching

I used the free blog software available at Blogger.com . I then had my programmer integrate it with my page template and I’ve been using my VA to submit the site to my list of blog directories. – Charlie Cook
