The dictionary defines ‘obstacle’ as a thing that blocks or hinders progress.

An obstacle is a challenge. It’s a problem. It’s an opportunity to grow and develop.

Tiger doesn’t run away from challenges. He welcomes them. He looks forward to them. He embraces them.

Each challenge helps Tiger gets better. They force him to improve his skills.

Several years ago a young golfer asked golfing legend Ben Hogan to help him with his putting. Hogan, who was rather gruff, asked him why he needed putting help. To which the aspiring star said, “I’m having trouble sinking 60 and 70 foot puts.”

“Why don’t you hit your approach shots closer to the pin!” Hogan replied and walked away.

Everyday I hear these lamentations – or is it whining – from sales people:

* I’m not closing enough sales.
* I’m not making enough money.
* Business is tough right now.

They don’t have problems closing sales. They need to do a better job of OPENING sales. Creating opportunities.

The obstacle to closing more sales isn’t the customer. It’s the salesperson.

What are your monthly, weekly, daily, hourly sales goals? What activities do you need to be doing to generate those results?

Anything worth doing, is worth doing well, and should be bench marked. Daily, weekly and monthly results should be recorded and tabulated.

Here are seven questions to ask yourself:

1. How many phone calls do you make each day for the sole purpose of scheduling an appointment with someone who has a need for your product or service?

2. How many people do you speak to?

3. How many of those people want to have further/continuing conversations with you?

4. How many people are you calling on that say “Thank you very much. But we’re not interested.” and the call ends in under 10 seconds?

5. How many people are you calling that you’ve tried to reach 5, 10, 20 times and never gotten through? At what point do you throw their name away and find a new lead?

6. How many people are you calling on that you’ve spoken to numerous times before, but they never did business with you?

Why continue calling on people who don’t do business with you? Maybe it’s time to stop playing the “The person who dies with the largest database wins.” game.

It’s OK to throw away names of people who don’t want to do business with you, or aren’t available to take your calls, or hide behind gatekeepers, secretaries and administrative assistants.

7. How many people are you calling that are brand new? People you have never attempted to reach before?

The lifeblood of a small business is NEW customers. But that means getting out of your comfort zone. That means doing the unthinkable: Prospecting. Cold Calling. Picking up the telephone. (Instead of having your secretary do it.)

Tiger Woods smiles at every obstacles. Do the same. Most of your obstacles are in your own mind.

My Will Moves Mountains
Tiger Woods’ ability to concentrate is legendary. He knows what he wants and he doesn’t stop until he gets it.

When Tiger says “My Will Moves Mountains” he means

* Focus.
* Dedication.
* Commitment.
* Persistence & Perseverance.

Tiger knows what he wants. He has a target. He sets goals, creates a plan, and then accomplishes them.

Tiger believes he can do anything if he put his mind to it.

Nothing is insurmountable. No mountain is too high. No river to wide. No golf course is too tough.

What about you?

What are your goals? Dreams? Desires?

What do you want to do with your life? What do you want to accomplish?

There’s an old saying, “When a man knows what he wants, he will move heaven and earth to get it.”

What mountains do you want to move? Where is your focus? Your commitment?

Remember: Life comes in CANS, not cannots.

I Will Do It With All My Heart
When Tiger Woods takes on a task, he’s completely and totally committed. He works. He practices. He studies.

He doesn’t want to be good. He doesn’t want to be better.

He wants to be the BEST.

He’s focused like a laser beam. His concentration is two inches wide and five miles long.

Then there’s you, me, and everybody else. Our concentration is two inches long and five miles wide. We’ve short attention spans, and even smaller concentration levels.

And you wonder why you’re not the huge success you could be.

If you want to become good. If you want to become great. If you want to become a legend, it takes hard work, dedication and focus.

People say you “Pay the price for success.” That’s flat out wrong!!!

You pay the price for not being a success. You pay a price for not accomplishing your goals. You pay a price for not living your dreams.

You pay a price for not having the things you want, both for yourself and your family.

Tiger Woods doesn’t make excuses. He expects VICTORY!

Use Tiger as your example. Smile at obstacles. Move mountains. Make commitments to do the best you can. And you’ll achieve more than you ever dreamed.

– Jeffrey

Reprinted with permission from “Jeffrey Mayer’s SucceedingInBusiness.com Newsletter.
