{"id":4468,"date":"2010-03-13T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2010-03-13T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/37d57f8fa2.nxcli.io\/blog\/?p=4468"},"modified":"2010-03-11T08:31:51","modified_gmt":"2010-03-11T13:31:51","slug":"sales-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/sales\/sales-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Forget About Being &#8220;Slick Willie&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s a sample conversation that was sent to me by a real sales pro, Gene Wrasman.\u00a0 Gene is going through my sales course and he offered these sales tips about how to avoid getting rejected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s Gene&#8217;s sales tips:<\/strong> As you introduce yourself to the prospect you can almost see the walls of protection go up.\u00a0\u00a0Here&#8217;s how the conversation should go:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Gene<\/strong>: &#8220;Glad to meet you.\u00a0 I\u2019m not here to sell you anything today, do you have about two minutes?&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/sales-tips1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4470\" title=\"sales tips\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/sales-tips1.jpg\" alt=\"sales tips\" width=\"113\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Prospect<\/strong>: &#8220;Two minutes, but that&#8217;s it.&#8221; (The wall stops going up between you and the prospect when you say you are not here to sell anything.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Gene<\/strong>: &#8220;I found out a long time ago that most sales people have promised you they could do it cheaper, faster and better than whoever you are currently buying from.\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t that right?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Prospect<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8220;Exactly right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Gene<\/strong>: &#8220;And after you told them you are happy with who you are buying from, they left.\u00a0 Then you threw away their card.\u00a0 Does that sound about right?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Prospect<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8220;Guilty as charged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Gene<\/strong>: &#8220;How could those sales people possibly make that claim if they haven\u2019t asked what you are presently buying, what kind of equipment you have, if you are having any problems and what your needs are?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Prospect<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8220;Well, I guess they couldn&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>You<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8220;When is a good time to survey your operation to see if you are actually getting the best program for your money?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Prospect<\/strong>: &#8220;Hmmm&#8230; let me see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Gene<\/strong>:\u00a0 &#8220;How about now?\u00a0 Do you mind if I ask you a few questions and then come back with some information that will help you make the best decision?\u00a0 The best decision may be to stay with what you are currently doing!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Gene&#8217;s conclusion:<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to get rejected if you&#8217;re asking questions and listening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>How many question marks are in the above conversation?<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>You really can&#8217;t SELL anybody anything.<\/strong> You can only help them make good decisions.\u00a0 You can only help them solve their problems.\u00a0 If you are getting rejected it&#8217;s because you&#8217;re too focused on trying to sell and not trying to be helpful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Here&#8217;s how NOT to do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I recently had a furnace go out in one of my rental homes during an extremely cold spell.\u00a0 There was no heat in the house except for a small electric heater.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I called a Heat &amp; Air company.\u00a0 The guy came out, took my furnace all apart and said I needed a new furnace.\u00a0 It will cost about $4,500.\u00a0 He wrote down some info, charged me $80 for the service call, said it would be a week before they could install it and left me with my furnace all apart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have people living in that house!\u00a0 What could be so wrong with a furnace that I couldn&#8217;t get a temporary fix?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I called a retired Heat &amp; Air expert I know and asked his advice.\u00a0 He walked me through the entire process over the phone, said I didn&#8217;t need a new furnace and he didn&#8217;t even charge me anything.\u00a0 I used to count on him for all my work before he retired.\u00a0 He was the most honest and helpful Heat &amp; Air expert I have ever known.\u00a0 He was NEVER without a long list of clients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I don&#8217;t know much about a furnace, but by the end of the weekend I thoroughly cleaned it, figured out what makes a furnace work and saved $4,500!\u00a0 I will eventually need a new furnace, however, now I have a little time to shop around.\u00a0 Maybe wait until spring when prices go down!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And that&#8217;s how you build a business.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t go for the quick sale.\u00a0 You go in with an attitude of how can I help you?\u00a0 How can I solve your problem?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Let&#8217;s look at the immediate situation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You\u00a0have a house with people living in it and there is no heat.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s make that our top priority.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s see if we can at least get this furnace working and get some heat in here for these folks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>What&#8217;s the immediate problem your customer has?<\/strong> Forget about selling.\u00a0 Forget about the big commission.\u00a0 Forget about trying to be &#8220;Slick Willie&#8221;
