{"id":4940,"date":"2010-05-04T06:59:11","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T11:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/37d57f8fa2.nxcli.io\/blog\/?p=4940"},"modified":"2010-04-29T12:18:04","modified_gmt":"2010-04-29T17:18:04","slug":"twitter-research-formula","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/web-marketing\/social-media\/twitter-research-formula\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter Research Formula"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Spent quite a bit of time ramping up on Twitter tools and techniques recently. \u00a0My goal was to learn how to use Twitter to research a market and connect with potential buyers, influencers and market participants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Using the system outlined below, in the span of one week, I was able to more than triple my followers, drastically improve the quality of information flowing both into my Twitter account and (hopefully) flowing to my followers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After 6 weeks, my followers had quadrupled and the quality of information flow has improved greatly \u2013 as has the traffic and readership of my blog and visits to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/twitter-formula.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4941\" title=\"twitter formula\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/twitter-formula.jpg\" alt=\"twitter formula\" width=\"150\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a>my websites. After a couple of months, my followers had doubled again, so I\u2019m certain this process works.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So I have outlined the tools and process I used to achieve these results and increase my influence and understanding of buyers in my marketplace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Tools:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/tweetadder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>TweetAdder<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Automates follows and unfollows to grow a targeted followership<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.topsy.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Topsy.com<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Twitter Tweet search engine, for finding tweets based upon keywords<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twellow.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Twellow.com<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Twitter bio search engine, for finding people in your target area of interest<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tweetdeck.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tweetdeck.com<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Twitter monitor portal<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/adwords.google.com\/select\/KeywordToolExternal\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Google Keyword Tool<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 for researching keywords in your target marketing<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wefollow.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>WeFollow.com<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Register at the user-powered Twitter directory<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Twitter Research Formula:<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Create Twitter account (or use your existing one); Note: each account is initially limited to 2,000 follows<\/p>\n<p>2. Make a list of keywords in your target markets or area of research<\/p>\n<p>3. Use Google Keyword tool to find and refine keywords (if you don\u2019t know your audience\u2019s keyword namespace)<\/p>\n<p>4. Validate keyword \/ topic trends using Google Trends (optional, esp, if you\u2019re looking for a growth market)<\/p>\n<p>5. Use Topsy.com to locate tweets in your target market using keywords<\/p>\n<p>6. Use Twellow.com to find people in your target market by title, interests, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">7. Register your top interest tags at WeFollow.com and locate top influencers<\/p>\n<p>8. Follow people in this market, learn the vernacular, their interests, blogs they read, sites they frequent, etc.<\/p>\n<p>9. Read the same blogs your target audience is reading (they\u2019ll pass links to these blogs in their tweets)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">10.\u00a0 Post useful and valuable comments on the blogs (with links back to your blog\/website)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">11.\u00a0 Tweet the best posts for your followers to learn from and get value from<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">12.\u00a0 Open up deeper conversations with selected followers, sending direct messages as appropriate; schedule phone calls to discuss common interests, opportunities, etc. with interested parties; exchange contact info (email, phone, etc.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">13.\u00a0 Create interesting posts about the target market\u2019s interest<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">14.\u00a0 Create your own blog around your target audience\u2019s interests<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">15.\u00a0 Retweet your target audience\u2019s posts \u2013 be a good human \u201cfilter\u201d and only retweet the best, most relevant<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">16.\u00a0 Create your own tweets that provide value to your audience<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">17.\u00a0 Reveal something about yourself occasionally,\u00a0including\u00a0links to photos or other interesting things about you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">18.\u00a0 Write a free e-book and use to get yourself established with the target audience and market as an authority<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">19.\u00a0 Occasionally lob in a Tweet linking to your money-magnet, landing page or product page (to make some $)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">20.\u00a0 Once per week, unfollow anyone who isn\u2019t following you after 5 or more days (using Huitter.com Mutuality)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">21.\u00a0 Rinse, repeat as necessary<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For example, in my case, I am interested in connecting with other forward-thinking executives, business owners and leaders involved in high-tech software, technology and online marketing. \u00a0My purpose is to learn as much as possible from others like me who have adventured into social media as a business tool for inbound marketing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So, I used Twellow.com to locate people with the keywords \u201cproduct marketing\u201d, \u201cVP marketing\u201d, \u201cCMO\u201d, \u201cCTO\u201d, etc. in their bios. \u00a0I also added everyone with \u201cproduct launch\u201d in their bio, since product launches is an area I specialize in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I\u2019m using TweetDeck to organize and track areas of interest. For example, I have set up an automatic Search in TweetDeck for keywords \u201cproduct launch\u201d, which automatically locates anything related to product launches taking place. \u00a0Then as people post about product launches I can efficiently track it all \u2013 following as appropriate, DM as appropriate, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Whenever anything of particular interest pops up, I use Topsy.com to quickly search through all relevant Tweets to learn more and ensure something important hasn\u2019t \u201cscrolled by\u201d while I was away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, so there\u2019s always targeted action on my behalf taking place to grow my Twitter followership, I have automated follows and unfollows (of those who don\u2019t follow me for a week after I follow them) using\u00a0<strong>TweetAdder<\/strong><strong>. I do not use the automated DM\u2019s, which are time-wasters and borderline spam.<\/strong> I recommend spending some time sending personal DM\u2019s to those who you\u2019re following as appropriate instead.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So that\u2019s a quick overview of how I\u2019m approaching market research growing my followership with the \u201cTwitter Research Formula\u201d. \u00a0Would love to hear how this compares to your own approach, and how you would suggest this formula be evolved and improved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Happy Twittering!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8211; <em>Rick<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">P.S.
