Relationships are the most valuable assets in publicists\u2019 portfolios. The most valuable relationships are those with the media because they in turn produce relationships with the greater public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And by media we mean both the traditional media\u2014print and television news reporters\u2014as well as the new media\u2014bloggers, podcasters, and social networkers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Generally, you won\u2019t see immediate results because these types of relationships must be nurtured. <!--more-->It\u2019s a slow, deliberate process like erecting a brick wall: firmly and precisely placing, aligning, adjusting and mortaring one brick at a time, row after row, until the wall is completed.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/pr-rules.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5375\" title=\"pr rules\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/pr-rules.JPG\" alt=\"pr rules\" width=\"100\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, unlike a brick wall, your relationship with the media is never complete\u2014you must always continue building.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Rules<\/strong> <strong>of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/public-relations\/double-media-placements\/\">Public Relations<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nYou can\u2019t win the publicity game if you don\u2019t know the rules. Only fools play high-stakes poker without knowing whether a flush beats a straight. Yet that\u2019s precisely what you\u2019re doing when you don\u2019t know the rules that govern relationships with the media.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since the media holds all the cards, they make the rules. If you want to play at their table, you have to adhere to their rules. Ironically, there are only three rules and they\u2019re alarmingly simple:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0You are a resource for the media.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0It\u2019s never personal. It\u2019s always about the story and its impact.<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The media can always change its mind, but you can\u2019t.
