{"id":6080,"date":"2010-08-20T06:39:15","date_gmt":"2010-08-20T11:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/37d57f8fa2.nxcli.io\/blog\/?p=6080"},"modified":"2010-08-19T14:50:08","modified_gmt":"2010-08-19T19:50:08","slug":"websites-title-tags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/web-marketing\/search-engines\/websites-title-tags\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Utilize Your Website&#8217;s Title Tags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When optimizing your small business website for high search engine rankings, targeted search engines such as Google and Bing, the first step is writing keyword driven title tags.\u00a0 The title tag is the title on the top left of your browser window.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Search engines put a lot of weight on these titles when ranking your website.\u00a0 Many small business websites utilize the company name or the name of that Webpage as the page title which is typically a mistake if you want to rank that Webpage for targeted keyword phrases. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Even if you do not execute any other types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/advertising\/google-this\/\">search engine optimization<\/a> in your webpages, keyword driven title tags will help you rank your website in a higher position.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/search-engine-optimization.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6081\" title=\"search engine optimization\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marketingforsuccess.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/search-engine-optimization.jpg\" alt=\"search engine optimization\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The title tag serves two purposes in relation to search engines. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>When a searcher searches keywords that are in your title tag you will rank higher for those keywords.\u00a0 Google\u2019s number one focus is to give the searcher relevant websites to choose from that is most closely related to their search.\u00a0 Google assumes your title tag describes the webpage and uses that information in deciding where to rank that webpage.<\/li>\n<li>The clickable title of your search engine listing is your title tag for that page.\u00a0 Unless you\u2019re a known brand your company name serves no purpose here.\u00a0 It is better to display text that is closely related to the searcher.\u00a0 For example if someone is searching for a\u201d Bankruptcy Lawyer in Philadelphia\u201d a website with a title of Philadelphia Bankruptcy Lawyer or Bankruptcy Lawyer in Philadelphia is much more relevant to the searcher then \u201cJ &amp; J Law Firm\u201d and will increase the chance of your site being visited from that search.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Title Tag Best Practices:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Research your keywords and make sure these are keywords that people are searching.<\/li>\n<li>Try to be somewhat specific in the keywords you target, very general keywords are very competitive.\u00a0 For example instead of targeting the keyword \u201clawyer\u201d, target \u201cPhiladelphia bankruptcy lawyer\u201d.\u00a0 By targeting that phrase you are actually targeting four searchable phrases in one shot; \u201cPhiladelphia bankruptcy lawyer\u201d, \u201cbankruptcy lawyer\u201d, \u201cPhiladelphia lawyer\u201d and \u201clawyer\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>If possible utilize the most important keyword words two times in the title but no more than twice.\u00a0 For example \u201cPhiladelphia Bankruptcy Lawyer \u2013 Bankruptcy Lawyer in Philadelphia\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Limit your title tag to 70 or fewer characters, including spaces.\u00a0 If you go over the 70 character limit it won\u2019t hurt your rankings but only the first 70 characters are displayed on Google\u2019s search results.\u00a0 Also it is possible that characters after the 70 character limit will carry less weight in your ranking.<\/li>\n<li>Capitalize the first letter of each word.<\/li>\n<li>Instead of using the word \u201cand\u201d (takes up space) you can use a \u201c-\u201c or \u201c|\u201d.\u00a0 Instead of \u201cServing Philadelphia and Delaware\u201d you can use \u201cServing Philadelphia | Delaware\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Google puts more weight on the left most words of the title tag.<\/li>\n<li>Your title tag should be focused on the content of that webpage.\u00a0 If the webpage describes a bankruptcy lawyer then bankruptcy lawyer should be in the title and not divorce lawyer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Keep in mind that by properly writing your title tags does not mean you will magically appear at the top of Google rankings for many targeted keyword phrases.
