There’s No Such Thing As Minor

Author: Charlie Cook   |   April 5th, 2011

I’m going to apologize in advance. This past Saturday I was in for surgery and my brain is still clouded with pain medication – so I’m going to apologize in advance for being a bit blunt below.

My brother in-law warned me. He said there is no such thing as… “minor surgery” and he was right.

Anytime you go under the knife it’s a major disruption to your life. But I think he was also rationalizing the fact that he’s opted to wear a leg brace when he skis instead of going in for surgery on his own ACL which he tore the week before I tore mine.

And now that I’ve had surgery and am dealing with the recovery – his approach is sounding better and better, at least in the short-term.

Which brings me back to the word minor.

Over and over I talk to entrepreneurs and small business owners who are looking for a quick fix, help with a headline, or a webpage or a radio ad. They’re looking for “minor marketing surgery” to repair their marketing strategy.

Well, just like the surgery I experienced, there is no such thing as “minor surgery for your marketing strategy”.

Sorry to break the news. (Well not really.)

The truth is every small business owner I’ve worked with has one major problem and it’s not just an email, a subject line, an ad or their web site.

The problem is their marketing mindset and their marketing strategy.

It’s the biggest problem every entrepreneur faces that’s crippling their business and keeping them from reaching their goals.

I don’t know where it comes from, but it seems everyone is drinking the same kool-aid, the stuff that makes them think just because they have a great product or service it will sell, or that just working harder is the answer, or that people want to be sold.

None of it is true!

The truth is before any of your prospects give a hoot about you, your products, your company and your processes, they first want to be confident you can HELP them.

Typical mindset that cripples sales – selling makes money
The mindset that generates sales – helping others leads to sales

Making the shift from a selling mindset to a helping mindset isn’t minor surgery.

No I’m not talking about a lobotomy, but it’s a big change – one you need to make if you want to truly tap into the hundreds of thousands of people out there eager to buy from an expert they know, like and trust.

So what happens when you make the shift from a selling mindset to a helping mindset?

Instead of just focusing on the sale, the endpoint in the marketing process, you shift your focus to the key activity that is the precursor to generating sales.

What is it?

Help your prospects get to know you, like you and trust you. Help them see you as the expert who can solve their problems.

Of course this can’t just be a false promise. To do this you need to demonstrate your expertise, share ideas and be, well, helpful.

It’s that simple!

Make the shift from a selling mindset to a helping one and your prospects will help you get rich in return.

Here’s the proven formula I use and teach to my one-on-one coaching clients that positions you as the helpful expert your prospects can count on.
