How To Keep Your Boat Afloat

Author: Tom Hopkins   |   May 13th, 2011

How many times has this happened to you?

You’re having a great day. You’re being productive and doing the things you set out to do for the day. You have a smile on your face and nothing can get in the way of your business’ success.

That is, until someone who’s having a horrible day comes around and tries to…

makes you feel just as miserable as they are.

Can negative thought patterns affect your small business success?

Of course they do! They give you the emotional droops. Your emotions bring on a mental sag. Those sagging mental powers cause a downturn in your job performance. And that downturn leads directly to a sharp decline in your income and directly affects any small business success chances you may have. The decline in your income gives you more negative thought patterns, and thus begins an unstoppable downward spiral that you can’t break free from.

But, it’s important to know we all go into declines. We all slide downhill now and then.

Here are a few things you should be continuously doing to keep from getting exposed to depression and negativity to keep your business and your mind in top shape:

Always be on the lookout for positive people. Actively seek them out. Encourage their friendship. Positive people are gems. Treasure every one you meet. Find ways to spend more time with them.

Talk to negative people less. You can’t do this passively. You can’t just stand there and let anyone who comes along monopolize your ears with a flood of negativity. At times, this means that you’ll be talking to nobody but yourself around the office.

But if that’s the only way you can talk to someone who’s up, so be it!

Keep pumping. Pessimism is bilge water, and your life is like a ship. All ships leak a little, but that’s no problem as long as the crew keeps pumping the bilge water out. Your pumps are your self-instructions or affirmations—your list of goals.

Think about what you’re pumping into and out of your personal and professional life with your constant thoughts that are negative or positive self-instructions according to your choice.

Be proactive. If changes are called for, make them now.

There’ll never be a better time. Make those changes and start cruising happily toward the rising sun of small business success.

    Dear Tom:

Thanks for sharing this blinded advice. It’s so true. Awake, fired up, ready to go, jump in the cockpit, zero in on my days plan, ignite the engine, on the track, I’m excited, I’m moving toward my goals at 220 mph then all of a sudden I hear the dreaded negativity, I’m distracted, I hit the wall in turn two… the day is over, egg shells line the track of success.

Who would have ever thought of this or even looked at what you share to be a major distraction in the daily passion driven track to success? It does, it zaps me, distracts me and takes my eyes off my days fun filled tasks. Thanks again for presenting something so simple yet so unnoticed!

I’ll be watching for turn two next time.

    Mark
