3 Ways Anyone Can Generate Leads

Author: Charlie Cook   |   May 4th, 2010

No matter what business you’re in, no matter what you sell, there are three ways you can attract more leads to grow your business.

BUY, BRIBE or BORROW.

BUYING attention

You know how this works. You write an ad and then pay for viewers to see it. If you’ve got great ad copy and your prospects respond it works.

Get it right and advertising will generate more than it costs. But even if it does, every time you want more leads, you’ll need to spend more on advertising. And every dollar you spend on ads is a small business marketingdollar less in profit.

BRIBING your target market

Don’t worry. I’m talking about an ethical bribe. In marketing, the bribe is your free ebook, email course, video tutorial or even free test drive.

What you’re doing is creating an irresistible offer, one where you provide something for free or practically for free in exchange for your prospect telling you they’re interested in what you sell and giving you their contact information.

The concept is simple. Create something that a qualified member of your target market would be crazy not to sign up for – for FREE.

This lead generation strategy is one of my favorites because once you set it up it costs you nothing or next to nothing. For example, imagine you created a series of video tutorials and offered them for free – in return for prospects giving you their name and email addresses.

You spend a week or two putting it together and getting it set up and then…

Each day and each week it attracts new leads, people interested in what you sell. Use this simple system over a few years and pretty soon you’ll have a list of tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of qualified leads!

If you don’t like the idea of bribing people, think about it as EARNING  leads. You earn your prospects’ trust by letting them get to know you and proving your expertise by demonstrating it with the information you share.

I would have used the term EARN in this article but it didn’t begin with the letter B.

BORROWING leads

Getting people to sign up one-by-one for your ethical bribe is a great way to generate leads, now imagine if instead of one-by-one you could get qualified prospects to sign up by the hundreds. Wouldn’t that be great?

Well you can, just by borrowing leads. Here’s how you do it.

Make a list of other businesses that share your target market. Then talk to them about sending out an email or a letter on your behalf. The simplest is to have them send out straight endorsement, telling how they struggled with XXXX until they found your product or service and how great you are. Of course you’ll want to mention your free offer in the email/ letter.

When they send the letter out, you’re borrowing their list, and the trust your marketing partner has with their prospects and clients. Make sure you honor this trust.

In some cases, your new-found marketing partners will be happy to swap mailings with you. In other instances they may want a percent of the sales you generate. In either case, it’s the fastest way to grow your business. It’s the profit multiplier strategy you need to make it big.

That’s it! Three ways to generate leads – BUY, BRIBE, BORROW.

P.S. This weekend, here on the coast of Connecticut, we had our first “hot” spell. It was over 80 so I took out my kayak. After not paddling for the past six months, it felt like hard work – at least for the first twenty minutes until my muscles limbered up and I got my rhythm going.

Pretty soon, I was slicing through the waves smoothly.

The same is true with your lead generation system. Initially it’s going to take some work to get it set up, but when you do it’s like having a machine that prints money every month for your business.

Your second “B” is probably the most effective, because if after reading your report the prospect is in need of your services, your in! An automatic cloaned salesman that never sleeps… love it.
