How To Not Do Yourself In With Bad Personal PR

By Shakira Brown   |   June 18, 2010

Have you ever wondered why you didn’t land a new client? Obviously, there are a number of factors that could prevent you from landing new business such as price and experience. But what about the intangible reasons related to your own personal public relations tactics?

Recently, I was part of a request for proposal (RFP) process for a billion dollar client looking for a full service firm to redesign its corporate website. Although nine firms were sent the RFP, only three responded. In a down economy, you would think that companies are dying to be considered for this type of project. Read More »

With PR, You Get What You Pay For…

By Shakira Brown   |   May 9, 2010

I have been fortunate to have some great clients over the years (Microsoft, BET.com, King Features Syndicate etc., international accounting firms) and they all have been very pleased with my work.

I consider myself a traditional PR pro who actually follows the tradition of reading or watching a media outlet before pitching. I have also established myself with thousands of media placements on behalf of my clients. So when I see random people with no sort of media or journalistic experience start calling themselves a publicist, I just shake my head in disgust. Read More »

How Social Media Can Threaten Your Business

By Shakira Brown   |   March 18, 2010

It was the tweet heard around the nation. Movie Director, Kevin Smith, tweeted that he had been booted off an Southwest Airlines flight. He was mad because flight personnel said he was too fat to fly.

He tweeted during the ordeal and posted pictures of himself. It happened faster than any news crew could have reacted without being on the flight poised for the story. Twitter is a PR liablity to be reckoned with. Read More »

Why You Should Think About Your PR Campaigns Before Execution

By Shakira Brown   |   March 4, 2010

National Entrepreneurship Week was February 20-27 (sorry if you missed it, mark it down for next year!). The Small Business Administration issued a press release on BusinessWire announcing a free youthpreneur webinar series that same week. They were hoping to stimulate entrepreneurship among students. The webinars took place from 11am-3pm that week and that is where this PR campaign seemed to go all wrong. Read More »

In Business, Communications and Reading are Fundamental

By Shakira Brown   |   February 4, 2010

On my way to a recent visit to the hospital with my teenage son who got injured during a wrestling match (a benign injury that required an x-ray), I wondered what I would write my next blog post on. Within in 10 minutes of our arrival I had the answer. I should have known a visit to the hospital would lead to good material.

The emergency room process at a quality suburban hospital is quite simple: check-in, see the desk to verify insurance, see a nurse to write a report and then sit in a patient room until the on-call doctor shows up to check you out. My issue was with the insurance check part of the process. Read More »

Free PR Only Goes So Far

By Shakira Brown   |   January 4, 2010

I know of a small yet somewhat successful business that just doesn’t understand what it takes to get to the next level after 35 years. Even though someone like me, an award-winning public relations expert, advised the company’s owners to spend a little money on advertising, a resistance to spending money holds the company back like a ball and chain.

Insteadof  becoming profitable, this fledgling company continues to linger on the hopes of press releases with soft news no one cares about. Read More »

One Of The Easiest Ways To Get Free Publicity

By Shakira Brown   |   December 4, 2009

There have been many times that I stopped patroning a store or service company because of horrendous customer service. Whether your small business is part of a large franchise or you run your own business – your customer service is a major part of your small businesses brand and public relations strategy.

I drive to a dry cleaner in the next town because my dry cleaner goes the extra mile with my order (no pun intended). Read More »
