The One Habit You Must Adopt To Survive and Prosper

Author: Charlie Cook   |   November 7th, 2012

Last week the home of a friend burned to the ground during hurricane Sandy, and other friends’ homes flooded.

The damage was severe and many are faced with having to rebuild the first floor of their homes here in the coastal Connecticut.Hurricane Sandy Success TipsI’m glad to say our home wasn’t one of those affected by the storm. Sure we lost power, phone and cable, but our backup generator kicked in and flooding wasn’t a problem either because…

After 23 years of living just 7 feet above sea level…and watching storm after storm flood our street and lap at our doorstep, three months ago in July, we took action and we moved. We moved just 8 miles away to higher ground and to a house protected from the wind and with a backup generator.

Our previous home was just across the street from the water, faced Northeast and we loved it… but at the same time we could see a trend. And based on the law of probability we could see what was coming next. It was just a matter of time before a big storm hit and it flooded – as it did last week.

Of course we had no idea it would be so soon.

Are we glad we moved to higher ground?

I’m still dazed at our good fortune.

In business, as in life, it pays to identify trends, to look ahead and make changes before you too become a victim to a change, ones in 90% of cases you could have anticipated.

The simple truth is that successful business leaders – from Cornelius Vanderbilt to Steve Jobs – used a simple habit to make themselves outrageously successful. And it’s a habit you can adopt to grow your business, to multiply your profits too.

Vanderbilt started in steamships, first regional and then ocean going. When railroads came to this country, he sold his ships and put his money in trains and track. Then when railroads became overbuilt, he shifted his focus to oil – and made billions in the process.

One of Steve Jobs’ early successes was the lowly desktop Mac that looked like a buiky toaster oven. Apple’s desktops helped it grow. Then a shift to iPhones and iPads helped it take off and become one of the most successful companies ever.

Both Vanderbilt and Jobs used one simple habit to keep their companies on the forefront and growing. They asked themselves the following two questions.

They asked themselves, “What’s next? What do customers want and need and how can I give it to them?”

It doesn’t matter what business you’re in – it’s changing. And you can either be a leader or be left in the dust.

To make sure you’re the former, one of the most successful businesses in your niche, use this simple habit.

Go to your calendar program, and put in an automatic reminder to spend 3-4 hours each month researching what’s changing in your field, what the trends are, and what your customers want.

Then make a plan to make any minor or major moves, and take action to become the leader you want to be.
