The Only Two Things You Need To Grow Your Business

Author: Charlie Cook   |   May 22nd, 2012

Wouldn’t it be nice if you finally knew the simple secret to increasing your profits this month, and in the months to come?

I know, after trying to explain marketing and sales to business owners like you for decades, it can all seem… complicated and overwhelming which is why so few business owners know what to do and how to get it right.

The issue is that marketing and sales are abstract concepts.

In order to make the whole thing clear to you… I’m going to talk about beer or some of you might say, I’m going to let the beer do the talking.

Imagine, for a moment, you owned a bar. Each week you order a case of a great tasting brew, say, Sam Adams. And it gets delivered, but somehow you forgot to tell your barkeep, and it sits in your warehouse.

Then a couple weeks go by and you look at all the cases of Sam Adams you have sitting around and you’d be inclined to call your distributor to tell them it’s not selling and to stop delivery.

But that would be big mistake, given the problem isn’t the beer but that it’s not being offered to any of your customers.

Whether you run a bar, own a gym, or sell transmissions, whatever business you’re in, it’s the same. You only need to focus on two things to increase your income.

1. Delivery – getting prospects to contact you
2. Conversions – getting people to drink your beer, sign up for your gym classes, or purchase a rebuilt transmission, new pool, or whatever it is you sell.

Over and over, here’s what I see otherwise smart business owners doing. They have a great service that would sell like hotcakes, but they’re not getting new leads delivered to their door and they’re not attracting enough qualified prospects.

No marketing means few sales.

Or they’re doing a great job with their marketing, they’re getting people to call or stop by, but they have no sales process to convert leads to sales.

Which is exactly what one kids gym owner we work with was doing. She was getting parents to sign their kids up for a free class. Then when they brought their kids in, no one on the staff was available to talk to them about their programs or sign them up, and sales went nowhere.

No sales process, means limited income.

Why am I telling you this?

Because I know that when things seem complicated, we shy away from them. And when they seem simple, we are much more likely to take action.

Years ago, during my college years, I was staring at a jeep engine that wouldn’t start, and was ready to call a tow truck. Even the World War II vintage engine looked way too complicated to deal with.

Which was when my best friend, looked at me and said, it’s only one of two things. It’s either a fuel problem or an electrical problem. We just need to figure out which.

Growing your business is the same.

There are only two things holding you back, you just need to figure out which.

You need fuel (a steady stream of qualified prospects) and you need electricity (a spark) to convert your qualified prospects into happy clients.

So what’s keeping your business from growing?

Delivery of qualified prospects or conversion of the prospects you have into clients?

Or both?

P.S. I don’t drink beer other than vicariously, but I’m more than happy to give people a bottle opener.

P.P.S. Once my buddy and I did a quick “is it gas problem or electrical problem” diagnostic on the jeep, it was easy to trace the problem to a dirty carburetor, clean it and get the engine going
