What’s Holding Your Business Back From Success?

Author: Charlie Cook   |   March 9th, 2011

You’re not going to hear this from your business partner, your yellow page ad rep, your mother and probably not from anyone you know. So I’m going to stick my neck out and be honest with you.

After working with hundreds of  hardworking business owners like you, I’ve learned a basic truth. The biggest obstacle to the growth of every business is…the bad advice that’s been repeated over and over and the misinformation about sales and marketing that we’ve all heard.

You know the stuff about how you just need to make more sales calls, or spend more on advertising or build a website.

I call it the pitch and pray mentality and this old school traditional marketing mindset can wreak havoc on your business profits.

To succeed, you’ve got to change this mindset and clear out all the nonsense about sales and marketing that you were taught.

Then you can change your mindset and the way you market your business. When you do you’ll attract more clients, build up your sales and profits and get more out of life.

Here’s one of the biggest lies you’ve been told.

Lie #1 – “It Takes Years Of Hard Work”

I’m sure you’ve heard it. If you just launched your business, people will tell you that it’s going to take a few years and to just stick with it.

Or if you’ve got a business and you want to grow it, people will tell you to keep plugging away and you’ll eventually see results. They’ll tell you to get in line and wait your turn.

Give me a break.

If you’ve been in an airport recently, you know how frustratingly long it can take to check in and go through security.

Long lines at the counter to check in, confirm your seat assignment and get your boarding pass. Longer lines at security as you take off your shoes and jacket, empty your pockets and pull out your laptop.

Savvy travelers know how to bypass the whole thing.

They’ve checked in ahead of time online and wave their iPhones at a scanner on their way to the expedited security line. With carry on luggage that has special compartments for laptops and small bags of toiletries, they breeze through security.

They’ve changed their mindset, adopted a new system and taken advantage of new technology to keep moving and stay ahead of the crowd.

And the same is true in business.

To get ahead you need to adapt and change your mindset.

Fortunately for you, most or your competitors have a herd mentality. They’re stuck standing in line, copying the same old boring stuff that everyone else is doing. Then they wonder why they’re getting the same old lousy results.

The other day, one of my clients was describing the exhibits at the tradeshows he participates in. He said that all the booths look alike and it was impossible to tell from the messages on their banners what most of the companies were actually selling.

Which is exactly the typical pathetic marketing that most companies use and lose with.

Then there are businesses that seem to appear out of nowhere and sell like crazy.

I interviewed a builder who launched his business just a few years ago, when most of his competitors were closing shop, and now is selling over $4,000,000 of homes a year!

How do people do it? How do they start a business and grow it dramatically in months or a year?

What’s the trick?

In the case of the builder mentioned above, he launched his business with a different mindset, one where instead of focusing on his pitch and selling, he used expert positioning as his marketing model, and social media as his messaging medium. The result is his business has taken off, all without spending a dime on advertising.

Most people don’t use this approach because they think that it can take years of hard work for them to become know as an expert. Again, they’re dead wrong.

In the late 1990s, when search engines were a dime a dozen, before Google took over, I launched a site that reviewed and ranked search engines and included a directory of search engines. I spent less than two weeks on the original site and then a few hours a week updating it.

Within months, I was being sought out as one of the top experts on search engines, getting radio, magazine interviews and mentions in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and more.

As you can imagine, the traffic to my site skyrocketed. I sold it a few months later at a handsome profit which paid for our family ski home in Vermont and much more.

The truth is that, it’s not about paying your dues. That’s a symptom of the herd mentality and it’s just plain wrong!

It’s an outmoded idea that dates back to the apprentice system of the middle ages. And if you want to run your life and your business on that model, be my guest, but you’ll be stuck slaving away to get at best, average results.

You can increase your sales and profits right away, or within just a few short months, if you can clear the lies you’ve been told about business and marketing out of your mind and apply the simple strategies laid out for you in The New Profit Rules.

You can jump to the head of the line when you use The New Profit Rules and literally leapfrog your competitors.

It’s that simple!
