The “Lazy Man Principle” On How To Market On Twitter

Author: Laura Roeder   |   November 12th, 2009

I have to tell you something.

People are lazy.

No – people are REALLY lazy. So lazy that for the most part they won’t bother to delete a few words off a message, even though that only involves hitting the delete key a few times!

I call this the lazy man principle.

But what does it have to do with twitter marketing?

Here’s what – most people’s tweets are TOO LONG to get retweeted! They are too long because people are TOO LAZY to cut them down in order to retweet them.

See what most people don’t think about is in order to retweet your message someone has to not just copy and paste your original message but squeeze in “RT @yourtwittername” and possibly some brief commentary as well.

All this stuff takes up precious characters, and on twitter you only have 140!

So if your message is exactly 140 characters or close to it most people will not take the time to edit out words in order to get it to fit with “RT @yourtwittername” in front of it.

The solution? Know your number. Know how many characters are left after RT @yourtwittername and aim for all of your tweets being short enough to repeat. Honestly you never know what will get retweeted!

this is a very good tip. I guess to allow space for the RT etc we have to limit to about 100 characters.
