Is Social Media Making You Dumb?

Author: Charlie Cook   |   September 29th, 2011

At first glance, most of the social media channels are full of everything from nonsense, to pretense to just plain silliness.

And unless you know the secrets to using them, it can make you feel dumb and even act dumb. While I really want to see my friend’s pictures of his… wife’s toboggan championship races on Facebook, how is a place where people share family pictures going to help me make money?

Or if you follow Twitter and see everything reduced to 140 character messages, most of which are about topics so mundane you can’t fathom why they were posted in the first place.

Or while you may enjoy trolling YouTube to watch really stupid people do amazingly dumb things for yucks, you keep asking yourself is this a place where I can build my brand and my business?

What’s the answer?

Is social media marketing good for anything more than just entertainment???

The first thing you should know is that it’s HOT! More and more communication is moving to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogs and YouTube type videos. And if you want to be where your market is, you need to get social media savvy.

Just like anything else, to make social media marketing work for your business, to use it to generate leads and sales you need to know 2 things. First you need to know which tools are out there, and which to use. To help you with these I posted The Ultimate Social Media Marketing Tools List on the blog.

You can access it for free with this link >>
(Remember if you get the opt-in box asking for your email just click on the MarketingForSuccess logo in the pop-up to get direct access.)

Almost everyone has heard of the top social media marketing tools, but in case you’re just getting started, you should know that many of these are useless without some to the third party tools that are listed here. Check out the list and let me know if I missed any.

Okay which tools to use?

Use the ones your prospects are using and where people are talking about the types of problems you solve. Of course for each tool, Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Videos, LinkedIn etc, there are key steps you should follow to be successful and to give you these I’ve been busy the last month interviewing the top experts and authors on social media marketing.

In a few weeks, I’ll be making these interviews available for one week, where the smartest people alive reveal their inside social media marketing secrets. If you want to avoid looking dumb by missing out on the social media marketing revolution or making common social media mistakes, make sure to stay tuned and make sure to listen in.

In the meantime, get to know the social media tools >>
