How to Unlock Hidden Profit Centers In Your Small Business

Author: Paul Martinez   |   September 26th, 2010

What’s your “Big Why”?

That’s the first question I ask new clients.  Most of the time, their response is a pause, followed by “Um…what do you mean?”

The reason I ask about the “Big Why” first is simple.  If you’re not clear on your true motivation for being in business, you’ll never hit your true potential. You’ll spin your wheels doing time-consuming tasks that you hate because “that’s the way it is”.  And worse, you may avoid taking risks—like launching a new marketing campaign—because you’re settling for “good enough” instead of “great”.

Now, if you’re a pragmatic type like me, let me reassure you of one thing. Figuring out your “Big Why” isn’t some “New Age” hocus-pocus.  It’s not about using the power of the universe to get what small business profitsyou want.  It’s about being 100% clear of what REALLY lights your fire…and then focusing on it with laser-beam intensity.

In short, your “Big Why” is the “why” behind your business.  It’s why you started your business in the first place.  And it’s why you get up every day and do what you do.

Take This Job and Shove It!

Do you remember when you decided to start your small business?

You probably got good and fed up with working for someone else. Or maybe you’re like me, and you simply never wanted to have a boss.  Whatever your reason for striking out on your own, the day you made that decision to start your business something big happened.

You began looking at the world a little differently.  You stopped thinking in terms of a “job” and started thinking about creating something bigger.  Something that spoke to you.  An idea that put fire in your belly.

That fire got you up early every day and kept you working late at night.  It gave you the drive to take risks that most people can’t stomach the thought of.  And it kept you going, day after day. Month after month.  Year after year.

But after awhile, that fire burned down a bit.  Now it’s more like a lump of hot coals in your belly.  And while you still love what you do…maybe you’re a not as “in love” with it as you were back in those early days.

Well, finding (or rediscovering) your “Big Why” will stoke those coals to a roaring inferno.  But this time, you’ll have the power and wisdom of hard-earned experience to help focus that energy even more.

Energy+Focus=Freedom

And what you’ll focus that energy on are the things that will help you reach your ultimate goals.

After all, you didn’t start a business to work 8, 10, or 12 hours a day for the rest of your life, did you?

Of course not.  If you’re like most entrepreneurs, you started your business for one reason: freedom.  Freedom from punching a clock.  Freedom to live on your own terms.  Freedom to create your own future.

And if you’re like most entrepreneurs, you’re still looking for more freedom.  And that’s exactly what uncovering your “Big Why” will give you.

That’s it for today.  Next time, I’ll start describing the process I use to help my clients discover their “Big Why”.  And I’ll show a step-by-step process that will let you do it on your own.

In the meantime, I’m going to give you some homework.  Yeah, yeah. I know.  But I promise you, the time you spend on this simple task will pay off big time.

Your homework is to ask yourself one simple question:

“If I could create my ideal life, what would it look like?”

Be specific.  Write it down.  And don’t limit yourself to think about your “ideal future” for your business.  Address every aspect of your life, including family, relationships, and so on.  Imagine your perfect life, and then put it on paper.

Can you see it clearly? Good.  Next time, I’m going to show you how to start making it a reality.
