How To Write Your Tagline…

Author: Charlie Cook   |   February 15th, 2011

Recently I decided I hated the tagline for my business. Well maybe “hate” is too strong a word, but I was sick of it and didn’t feel like it represented what my business is about.

And isn’t that what a tagline is supposed to be? A description of what you do, what makes you unique and the benefit you provide – all wrapped up in just a few words. So I went to work writing my new tagline – and as someone who wrote the book on how to write marketing messages you’d think it would have been a piece of cake.

Nope!

It was hard.

Why?

Your tagline, your marketing message, isn’t just a few words strung together to pitch your products or services – it’s a reflection of the core of what you are about, what you represent and what you bring to the table.
To be honest, I struggled.

I wrote dozens of variations. Many I loved, well at least until the next morning or until I shared them with a few people.

I spent time, off and on, working on my new tagline for weeks. Then finally I knew I was close, but not quite there. And just as I was getting in my car to head to the gym at the end of the day – I came up with the following six words.

Here they are, and why I picked them.

Sell More. Profit More. Live More.

Why’d I choose these six words?

Sell More – Profit More.

There are two ways to increase your revenue. You can focus on attracting more leads and more individual sales or you can focus on making more from your existing customers. Or you can do, what I think every business owner should do – which is both.

I love showing business owners the simple (and mostly free) ways to attract more clients – increase the number of sales they make. And that’s great, but the real profit potential for most businesses is in increasing per client sales, via upsells and repeat sales.

Now I haven’t mentioned the third element of my marketing message and most marketing consultants don’t focus on anything but the money end of the equation. But really, what’s the reason any of us make money in the first place. Beyond putting a roof over your head and bread on the table, what are you after?

If you’ve read, more than a handful of my missives you know that while I work hard, I’m a big believer in spending time with my family and playing hard, too.

In fact this week, I’m spending a week with my son in British Columbia, skiing and thanks to my trusted assistant, you’re reading this while I hit the slopes.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, the purpose of increasing your sales, and increasing your profits is ultimately to improve your life, to live your dream and spend more time with your family and friends.

So there you have it. Six words that reflect my work and life, and in turn, reflect the interests of the clients I enjoy working with.
