Three months ago Jim signed on as a personal coaching client and step by step, I showed him the simple things to do to convert more visitors to buyers. Now his site is gaining traction, he’s doubled the sign-up rate to his newsletter, people are responding to his sales letters, and revenue has jumped by over 100%.

Creating a top selling web site is something like baking a cake. Use the wrong ingredients or the wrong amounts and no one will eat the tasteless thing, no matter how pretty it looks. Use the right ingredients and the right proportions of butter, sugar, flour milk and flavorings — a reliably delicious recipe — and your customers will be asking for seconds.
So what was the problem with Jim’s website recipe and how did I help him double sales in less than 3 months?
3 Bottlenecks That Were Killing Jim’s Online Sales
1. Low Search Engine Ranking
One year ago, Jim had hired a local web designer to create a more professional-looking site. The result looked great but lacked some of the basic information the search engines need to rank Jim’s site.
The homepage was one big image and lacked any searchable text. And the subsequent pages of the site were just named after Jim.
I showed Jim how and where to include his keywords on his site pages. Once he made the changes, his search engine rankings shot up, and so did traffic to his site.
More traffic is good, but in Jim’s case it only had a minimal effect on the number of people who were signing up for his newsletter or buying his products.
2. No Compelling Free Offer
All the traffic in the world won’t help make you money unless you have a chance to establish yourself as the trusted source of solutions for your prospects’ problems. Whether you offer a free report, free ecourse, or free videos, the objective is to demonstrate your understanding of your prospects’ concerns and your ability to solve their problems.
Jim had a free offer, but it was titled “Free Newsletter” — not at all compelling. I suggested some alternative wording. Since Jim didn’t have a CMS (content management system) that allows him to alter the text on the page, I advised him to use a drop-down sign-up box.
The results were immediate. The first week Jim added his enhanced free offer to the homepage, he doubled his signup rate.
Now Jim had improved his search engine ranking, had more traffic, and more people adding their email addresses to his mailing list so he could market to them. All good, but his sales had only picked up by a few percent. What else was holding his sales back?
3. Catalog-Style Sales Page Format
Jim’s sales pages showed a photo of each product along and a “Buy” button at the top of the page. Below that, he’d listed the features of each product and what was included in the sale.
Whoops! Asking people to buy before they understand the value of the product is a fatal mistake and it was killing Jim’s sales.
Jim changed the sequence of information on his sales pages, putting the sales copy first and the order button second, and he immediately saw sales increase. How hard was that?
We talked more about creating effective sales pages. Jim tested a model I recommended, hiring a copywriter I know to write a longer sales page for one of his products. Sales of that product jumped, and Jim now has a successful model to follow for all his sales pages.
Jim’s sales last month were more than double his previous best month.
