Solving The Social Media Puzzle With 2 Magic Words

Author: Susan Rice Lincoln   |   May 24th, 2010

Are you tired of hearing all about the wonders of social media but experiencing none of them? Do you want to finally start capturing the benefits of social media (increased traffic, bigger community, more clients, greater brand awareness and increased sales)?

The key to getting what you want out of social media lies in two simple but magical words:

Magic Word Number One:  CONTENT.

High-quality content is at the center of any successful social media program.  Your social media communication needs to be jam-packed with content that is ongoing, varied and generous: ideas, social media puzzle thought pieces, interviews, tips, product reviews, blog critiques, updates about conferences and stimulating questions.

A winning social media program is not about the latest technical tool or cool software.  It is all about researching, creating, writing, sharing and managing content.  People are captivated by social media because they want to meet new people and be introduced to new ideas.

They do not gravitate to social media sites to BUY PRODUCTS.  This is not to say that you can never sell products or find loyal clients through social media.  But the social media selling process is a long cycle; it starts first with conversations that revolve around excellent, fascinating content.

Magic Word Number Two: REPURPOSE

Once you have created all that delicious content, you absolutely must use it in every possible way.  It is not enough to write a post or film a video or record a podcast, slap it up on a site and hope it sticks.   You must take every morsel of content you create and stretch it as far as you can.  Use it over and over again in different formats and on diverse platforms so that you can touch as many social points as possible.

Get your message out there in as many places as possible. Unless you have unlimited resources (and no small business does!), you absolutely must repurpose your content.

On my next post, I will tell you exactly how to do that…
