How to Close More Sales – Without the Sales Pitch

By Charlie Cook   |   October 12, 2010

Is it taking you too long to close the sale? Are you getting the brush off? If so, you’re using the wrong approach.

There is no set amount of time it takes to close a sale, but unless you’re selling something that costs tens of thousands of dollars, you’re not going to make money if you spend hours with each prospect. In most cases, 30 minutes is all you should need to close the sale. Read More »

The Best Networking Tool Ever

By Charlie Cook   |   October 7, 2010

Subject: MFS: {!name} – The Best Networking Tool Ever
{!name},
Over the last couple of months I’ve been talking to my son about looking for a new job. You know, trying to give him some guidance without being the pushy Dad.
Right out of college his first job (big surprise!) was in online marketing, and it’s been a great starter job. But now, two years later, I’m thinking it’s time for him to move up the ladder and find a new, more challenging job. Marketing seems like a good fit. You know how Dads can be.
I’ve been working on him to get out there and network, make connections, and see what positions are available. And I know he thinks he doesn’t have any connections, being just two years out of college and all.
So just for fun I did a quick search on my favorite networking tool, LinkedIn.com. First I selected the advanced search function in the top right-hand corner. Then I selected location (New York City), the industry area (marketing), and 1st and 2nd level connections. Under school I typed in Hamilton, the college my son graduated from.
What’d I find?
Over 160 alumni of my son’s school — people who’d be more than likely to talk to him — work in marketing and advertising in New York City where he lives. And of course each of them probably knows dozens of others in the field.
With just a little effort my son could find more job opportunities than he’d know what to do with, and learn a ton about his field.
Whether you’re looking for a job, or want to grow your business by connecting with new clients, LinkedIn.com is one of the most powerful tools out there. And it offers most of its functions for free.
Want to learn the secret to making this incredible tool work for you to find a job or grow your business?
My colleague, Jan Vermeiren, author of “How to REALLY use LinkedIn,” is hosting a free webinar this coming Tuesday, October 12. And I strongly recommend you sign up.
I’ve included the link below, and before you click on it, I’ve got to tell you Jan is not a sales person. His sign-up page doesn’t sell and only gives a rough idea of the value he provides. But I know from interviewing Jan that he knows LinkedIn inside and out. His free webinar is a must attend for everyone in business.

What’s Your Perfect Vacation?

By Charlie Cook   |   October 4, 2010

If you could take a week off, what would you do? Would you lie on the beach, go to Disneyworld, fly to Paris, or kick back at a luxury resort in the Caribbean?

Isn’t that what most people think of when they think of the perfect vacation?

Well – maybe – but not me! When my wife and I take 10 days off in the fall we go to Vermont so we can play hard.

I Never Got the Email…

By Charlie Cook   |   September 28, 2010

I’d sent out the email to my crew, my son, daughter and various spouses – you know the people I’d taken out sailing this summer, but there I was Saturday at Greenwich Point, putting my boat away on my own.

I’d heard a handful of excuses, “I’ve got a bad back,” “I never got the email,” but the end result was the day had come when I needed to pull my sailboat boat out for the winter – and I as doing it by myself. Read More »

Is Video Marketing the Fix For Your Small Business?

By Charlie Cook   |   September 13, 2010

This past weekend I decided to fix the gears on my wife’s bicycle and found something shocking that could help you with your small business.

The gears had been skipping for over a month and a grey Sunday prompted me to decide it was time to fix her bike so it shifted properly, especially because I was hoping to talk her into a ride in the drizzle.

I like to think that I’m smart enough to fix simple stuff around the house and being an avid cyclist I should know a thing or two about bikes. Read More »

Are You a Kingfish or a Bottomfish?

By Charlie Cook   |   September 6, 2010

In the spirit of full disclosure you should know that I like to goof off – to take vacations as often as I can and skip work which is exactly what I was doing two weeks ago with my wife – cycling the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington. We spent our second night at the delightful Kingfish Inn on Orcas Island.

Our room had a perfect view of the bay and the Olympic Mountains along with a porch to sit and admire the view from. The room was spacious, the bed comfortable and the towels big and fluffy. And all we had to do for dinner was stumble downstairs to the packed restaurant where the food was excellent – especially the peach blueberry cobbler. Read More »

Don’t Make This Marketing Mistake Again…

By Charlie Cook   |   August 30, 2010

Ever hit your finger with a hammer when you were hanging a picture on the wall? It hurts! Make this painful mistake once, and you’ll swing more carefully the next time, and try to improve your aim. With practice, you’ll hit the nail on the head and get the job done.

Is your marketing also missing the mark? That will hurt your bottom line. Banging away with the same failing marketing strategy is like hitting your finger over and over, all pain and no gain. Believe it or not, I know many small business owners that do exactly this.  Read More »
